Dave Trott's 13" Binocs

Dave Trott's 13" Binocs Dave Trott built this 13 inch binocular. At first glance, this is the most complex looking, gadget covered contraption you've ever seen. It has springs, knobs, and levers everywhere. But when you use it, you discover it to be incredibly easy to use.

I've looked through several other large binoculars, and this pair is the best I've ever seen. On most binocs you have to play around with many adjustments to set the interpupillary distance, get the scopes realigned with each other, etc. I often try adjusting things for about 5 minutes, and then give up.

On this one, there is a horizontal and vertical alignment wheel, and an interpupillary setting wheel. Dave showed me the wheels, and I looked in the eyepieces. Within about 15 seconds, I had the alignment perfect, with an excellent view. I couldn't believe it was that easy, so I cranked all three knobs back and forth, got the scopes misaligned, and then realigned them. Sure enough, just a few seconds and it was back in perfect alignment, and I could actually observe with both eyes.

If I ever build a large binocular, you can bet I'll take another look at this one first. Dave has really done this one right!
